Some people discover their passion early. Others spend years searching for it.

For Mr. Ujwal Poojari, swimming became more than just a sport—it became a lifelong purpose.

Born into a close-knit family that is characterized by warmth and support, Ujwal often finds joy in recounting his childhood memories, proudly laughing as he declares, "I'm the big one!" This playful proclamation reflects not only his role as the eldest sibling but also the bond he shares with his parents, younger brother, and younger sister.

Growing up in such a nurturing environment, Ujwal learned the values of teamwork, responsibility, and leadership from an early age, which have significantly shaped his personality and aspirations.

From the very beginning, sports held a central place in Ujwal's life, serving as both a passion and a source of discipline. His first love was tennis, a sport that captivated him with its blend of strategy, agility, and precision. He dedicated countless hours to perfecting his skills on the court at the Police Training Academy in Nashik, a facility that not only provided him with the opportunity to play but also fostered a sense of community among fellow sports enthusiasts. The thrill of competition and the joy of improvement kept him motivated throughout his formative years. Ujwal's commitment to tennis was evident as he participated in local tournaments and friendly matches, where he developed not only his athletic abilities but also lifelong friendships and a sense of camaraderie with his peers.

While tennis was the sport that ignited his competitive spirit, swimming entered Ujwal's life as a delightful leisure activity. Initially, it served as a refreshing escape from the pressure of academic life and the intensity of tennis practice. The cool water of the pool became a sanctuary for him, where he could unwind and enjoy the simple pleasure of gliding through the water. As he honed his swimming skills, Ujwal discovered that this sport also offered its own set of challenges and rewards. He appreciated the tranquility of swimming laps and the invigorating feeling of being in the water, which complemented his more high-energy pursuits on the tennis court.

Ujwal's journey through sports helped him grow not just physically, but as a person. Tennis taught him discipline, while swimming gave him a sense of peace and balance. Together, these sports shaped his personality and helped him stay focused in every aspect of life. Alongside sports, Ujwal completed his Science degree, proving that he could balance both academics and athletics. His time at the Police Training Academy was a period of learning and personal growth. It taught him how to face challenges, stay committed to his goals, and always give his best. Looking back, Ujwal believes the values he learned through tennis and swimming—discipline, perseverance, and balance, continue to guide him in overcoming challenges and making the most of every opportunity.

At just seven years old, he attended a 12-day municipal swimming camp in Nashik. What started as a simple vacation activity soon turned into an obsession. Without a professional coach to guide him, Ujwal relied on self-practice, determination, and discipline. His weekly routine consisted of tennis twice a week and swimming twice a week, constantly pushing himself to improve.

The turning point came when he moved to Mumbai and joined the Andheri Sports Complex. For the first time, he experienced structured coaching and mentorship under Mr. Raju Palkar, a coach who would leave a lasting impact on his life. "Coach Raju Palkar didn't just teach me swimming—he taught me the art of coaching. Even today, he continues to guide and support me. I'll always be grateful for everything he's done for me." Before becoming a full-time coach, Ujwal balanced two very different worlds. For six months each year, he worked aboard a passenger cruise liner, and for the remaining six months, he coached swimming. It was a challenging but fulfilling lifestyle that allowed him to pursue both his profession and his passion.

Everything changed in 2012. Ujwal made a bold decision to leave life at sea behind, a world filled with the salty breeze and the rhythmic waves, and dedicate himself entirely to swimming coaching. This was not merely a career shift; it was a profound commitment to helping individuals of all ages discover their own confidence, enhance their fitness levels, and develop essential life skills through the transformative medium of water. Ujwal understood that swimming is more than just a sport; it is a vital life skill that can empower people, instilling a sense of security and freedom in the water. Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, Ujwal firmly believed that a great coach should never stop learning.

To this end, he enrolled in several advanced coaching programs, immersing himself in the latest techniques and methodologies to sharpen his teaching methods. He sought out workshops, seminars, and courses that offered insights into not just swimming techniques, but also effective communication and motivational strategies that could inspire his students. Today, he proudly holds the title of an AUSTSWIM Certified Coach, having been trained in the internationally recognized Australian method of teaching swimming, which is renowned for its comprehensive approach to instruction across all age groups, from toddlers to adults. As the years progressed, so did his vision for what swimming coaching could achieve. Ujwal began to see the potential for his program to not only teach swimming but also to create a community. He envisioned a space where individuals could come together, share their fears, triumphs, and experiences, and support one another in their journeys. This vision led him to develop specialized programs tailored to various demographics, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Each program was designed with the understanding that every swimmer has unique needs and goals. Moreover, Ujwal embraced the integration of technology into his coaching practice. He started utilizing video analysis to provide swimmers with immediate feedback on their techniques, allowing them to visualize their progress and make necessary adjustments in real-time. This innovative approach not only enhanced the learning experience but also fostered a culture of accountability and self-improvement among his students.

Ujwal's dedication did not go unnoticed; he began to receive recognition within the local community and beyond. His coaching philosophy, which emphasized patience, encouragement, and personalized instruction, attracted a diverse group of students. Many of them came to him not only to learn how to swim but to build their self-esteem and overcome personal challenges. Ujwal took great pride in watching his students grow, both in their swimming abilities and as individuals. In summary, Ujwal's journey since 2012 has been one of transformation and growth, not just for himself but for everyone he has coached. His commitment to lifelong learning, community building, and innovative teaching methods has solidified his reputation as a leader in the field of swimming coaching. Today, he continues to inspire and empower individuals, helping them navigate the waters of life with confidence and skill.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, open water swimming witnessed a massive surge in popularity, especially with the growing number of triathletes. Recognising this shift, Ujwal expanded his expertise into open water coaching and now trains numerous triathletes preparing for endurance events. His team has also grown into a dedicated team of passionate coaches who share his philosophy of patient, structured, and result-oriented coaching. Beyond competitive swimmers, the team also works closely with children with special needs, ensuring that swimming remains accessible and empowering for everyone. Today, Ujwal trains swimmers at the Renaissance Federation Club (Address: Off, Juhu Versova Link Rd, Gharkul Society, Bharat Nagar, Four Bungalows, Andheri West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400053), where beginners, fitness enthusiasts, competitive swimmers, children, adults, and triathletes all come together with one common goal—to become better, stronger, and more confident in the water.

For Ujwal, success in swimming has never been about speed alone. "It's about consistency. It's about discipline. The more you practice, the better you become."

In today's fast-paced world, where people of every age are embracing healthier lifestyles, Ujwal believes swimming is one of the most complete forms of fitness. It builds strength, improves endurance, enhances mental well-being, and, most importantly, equips people with a skill that can one day save lives.

After dedicating over 15 years to coaching, his mission remains unchanged—to make more people comfortable, confident, and capable in the water. His message to every parent, student, and fitness enthusiast is simple yet powerful: "Swimming is not a camp skill... it's a life skill. The more you practice, the better you become—not just in swimming, but in every aspect of life."

And perhaps that's what defines the Mumbaikar Hustle spirit—turning passion into purpose, staying consistent through every challenge, and creating a lasting impact, one stroke at a time.
