From a Ninth Standard Dream to the Captain's Seat: The Journey of Captain Fazal Kanchwalla

Some dreams arrive early in life. For some, they evolve over time. But for this Mumbai-based aviation professional, there was never any confusion.

He was in the ninth standard when he decided that one day he would sit in the cockpit of a commercial aircraft. While many teenagers were still figuring out what they wanted to become, he had already charted his flight path. Today, that childhood dream has taken him to the captain's seat at IndiGo Airlines, where he has proudly served for the past eight years. His journey is living proof that while many people dream of success, only those who remain disciplined and persistent truly earn it.

Once he had made up his mind to become a pilot, every decision he took revolved around that dream. He chose Science in higher secondary education (10+2) before pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aviation. Alongside his degree, he enrolled in flying school, ensuring that his classroom learning was complemented by practical flying experience. Aviation wasn't simply a career option for him—it was the only destination he ever wanted to reach.

Like every worthwhile journey, the road was anything but smooth. One of the earliest challenges was clearing the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) examinations, where every paper required a minimum score of 70 per cent. The syllabus was demanding and the expectations were high, but through determination and disciplined preparation, he successfully cleared all his DGCA papers within three attempts, moving one step closer to the cockpit he had dreamed about for years.

If passing the examinations was the first hurdle, finding employment proved to be an even bigger test of patience. The aviation industry was experiencing a slowdown, with limited hiring opportunities for newly qualified pilots. What followed were three difficult years filled with uncertainty, applications, interviews and waiting. It was a period that could have discouraged anyone, but instead of allowing disappointment to take over, he chose to invest in himself. He continued reading aviation manuals, revising technical concepts and staying updated with industry procedures, believing that whenever an opportunity finally arrived, he had to be fully prepared to seize it.

That opportunity eventually came in the form of IndiGo Airlines. Today, eight years later, he proudly serves as a Captain, proving that success is not always about how quickly you reach your destination, but about refusing to give up while you're still on the journey.

When asked what has contributed most to his growth, he doesn't speak about talent or luck. Instead, he credits discipline. He believes motivation is temporary, but discipline is what carries you through the days when things become difficult. Remaining committed to his goal, even during the uncertain years of job hunting, became one of the defining characteristics of his journey.

He also believes that becoming a pilot is not the end of learning—it is merely the beginning. Aviation is a profession that demands continuous study, regular training and complete adherence to procedures. Every flight comes with responsibility, and every pilot must constantly update their knowledge to ensure the highest standards of safety.

For young people aspiring to enter aviation, his advice is honest and practical. He encourages students to pursue this profession only if they are absolutely certain that becoming a pilot is their dream. It is an immensely rewarding career, but it is also financially demanding and comes with a challenging work-life balance. Passion is important, but commitment is even more essential.

These structured programmes not only provide world-class training but also offer a clearer pathway towards airline employment, giving aspiring pilots a stronger foundation for their careers.

While many people encourage others to simply follow their passion, he believes passion should always be balanced with practicality. Understanding the financial investment required to become a pilot is just as important as having the desire to fly. Looking back, he considers himself fortunate to have had the unwavering support of his family. Their encouragement, both emotional and financial, gave him the confidence and stability to pursue his dream without compromise.
